remember your salt while reading this: the transition from small intimate societies to huge anonymous societies started many thousands of years ago, and was mostly completed hundreds of years ago. small intimate societies still exist today. huge anonymous societies were around before Ancient Egypt, some survived for 1,000s of years. Were these agglomerations of small intimate societies, some held together by a huge (and mainly distant) force, others more like an extended family ? the most stable (long lasting) societies seem to have been around earlier. the Philippines appear to have kept the same societal structure (rule by Datu/Family (many being the same families)) for at least a couple of thousand years, with fortunes rising and falling, assimilating the odd invader together with some of their attributes.
