Hood, TX. On Tuesday, Maj. Hasan revealed to the court his motivation for the mass shooting on November 5, 2009; a shooting which killed 13 and wounded over 30 people. Maj. Hasan stated that he murdered and injured his fellow soldiers and civilian contractors because he was defending the Taliban. With that statement he once again confirmed what everyone knows and what our own government refuses to acknowledge. Nidal Hasan is a Jihadist and the shooting at Ft. Hood is an act of terror and not a work place shooting. This statement from Maj. Hasan will probably not come as a surprise many people following his case. A congressional report showed that Maj. Hasan has exchanged emails with Anwar al’Awlaki; the US born cleric with ties to al-Qaida who was killed in a US drone strike in 2011. Maj. Hasan also has made statements to Al Jazeera; one of which he identified with the mujhadeen. When he was a student, Capt. Hasan gave a class presentation accusing the US of being at war with Islam and tried to justify suicide bombings. Capt. Hasan’s superiors ignored such blatant radical statements much to the dismay of his classmates. There were obvious signs that Maj. Hasan was radicalizing while serving in the Army, but instead of doing something about it he was promoted from Captain to Major; and then sent to Ft. Hood. The victims of Maj. Hasan are currently suing the Department of Defense for $750 Million because they claim the DOD put political correctness over national security. The Pentagon refuses to admit that they dropped the ball with Maj. Hasan and no matter how obvious it may appear; they will not say that they hold diversity to a higher standard than the safety of our nation. Because the DOD refuses to label the Ft. Hood shooting as a terrorist attack, the victims are not receiving the care and benefits they rightfully deserve. The surviving victims were denied purple hearts; which means they are prevented from collecting benefits that they would normally receive from injuries suffered in combat. Why would a change of Maj. Hasan’s status from disgruntled employee to enemy combatant matter? The Pentagon and the White house claims that reclassifying the Ft Hood shooting will compromise Maj. Hasan’s trial. What makes this theory a fallacy is Maj. Hasan isn’t denying that he murdered and wounded his fellow soldiers and civilians. The end result will be the same. He will be found guilty and punished to the fullest extent of the law. Our lawmakers have been pushing for a reclassification for the past 4 years so the victims can be rightfully compensated. The revelation of Maj. Hasan’s motivation will probably not change the Pentagon’s and White House’s stance on this issue. Their preference to ignore an obvious terrorist will put more Americans in jeopardy in the future. That has been shown in the case of the Boston Marathon bombers, and it will continue so long as diversity trumps our safety.
