strengthinunion.org/ Documentary Film Series will tell the Story of the History of the American Labor Movement One of the most important stories in American history has never been told on film…. …Strength In Union will tell that story! The struggle for working class men and women to gain union representation is a tale of violent battles, political intrigues, complex conspiracies, and legal confrontations. It is a story that has shaped our government, economy, and affected the living standards of every American. The Arete Living Arts Foundation would like to announce Strength In Union, an epic documentary film series that will bring to life the dramatic history of the American Labor movement. The film began production in April of 2012, and has a scheduled completion date of spring 2014. The film will consist of five one-hour episodes. The first four episodes will tell the story of the labor movement from the early 1800s through the 1970s. The final episode will begin with the Reagan era and focus on current challenges and issues facing labor. Among the many events covered are the Homestead Strike, the Haymarket Affair, the battle of Blair Mountain, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire, the Flint auto worker’s sit-ins, the merger of the AFL-CIO, and the firing of the air traffic controllers during the PATCO strike. The film is directed by activist and multimedia artist Caeser Pink, and produced by Heather Milburn and Daniel Waingarten of the Arete Living Arts Foundation. Film Director Caeser Pink has stated, “This is a great story that must be told, and it is another way of understanding the history of the American people. Among the film’s goals are to educate the public so that they understand the struggles and sacrifices that were made by heroic union men and women so that working people are able to enjoy the lifestyle that we now take for granted.” Principal filming is progressing rapidly. Over 50 top labor leaders, historians, and activists have been interviewed for the project. Among those who have lent their support by participating are Leo Gerard, International President of the United Steel Workers, Cliff Guffey, President of the American Postal Workers Union, Lawrence J. Hanley, President of the American Transportation Workers, and William Dougan, President of the National Federation of Federal Employees. Narrators include famed actor Reg. E Cathey (The Wire, Person Of Interest, House Of Cards), Emmy and Golden Globe winner Barbara Hershey, and legendary activist and folk singer Pete Seeger. The filmmakers are seeking guidance and partnership with labor. Labor leaders, activists, and union workers are urged to contact the producers if they would like to have their voices heard, or share their insights into how this important story should be told.
