[tbs 정오뉴스] ▶(Report) Govt Announces End To Search Operations On Sunken Ferry The decision came this morning after a meeting of related government ministers presided over by Prime Minister Chung Hong-won. It came nearly 7 months after the Sewol ferry capsized and sank in waters off the southwestern island of Jindo with the loss of more than 300 lives, mainly high school students. Of the total number of people on board, only 174 were rescued. The government had vowed not to bring in the heavy lifting cranes without the agreement of the victims families, but the recovery teams warned that time was fast running out for the divers as winter approaches. Declaring an end to the search efforts this morning, Maritime Minister Lee Ju-Young(이주영) said he deeply regretted that nine victims remained unaccounted for. He said the government deployed as many resources as possible, but the situation inside the ship has become too difficult for search operations to continue. In a separate press breifing, the families said they would accept the governments decision, with an understanding that to continue diving operations would be unsafe for those trying to help. The announcements came just hours before a court was to deliver a verdict and sentence in the murder trial of Sewol captain Lee Jun-Seok(이준석) who, along with several senior crew members, has been charged with homicide through willful negligence over the ferry sinking.
