tonight I did something special for my dad, and for one of his dear friends. It took about 10 minutes of my time, and it was right up there with one of the most important, most memorable things Ive ever done in my life. One of my dads most faithful friends was named Vito, he was the barber who worked on the ground floor at State Mutual. My dad was a loyal client of his (probably since 1966). Last week, I happened to notice there were several 50-somethings in the T&Gs obituaries. I glanced at the names and one of the obituaries struck me. It was for a man, aged 55, who died unexpectedly. The obituary indicated he was a hairdresser, and that he worked for 35 years with his father Vito, who was also his best friend. I knew immediately that this was dads friend who owned the hair salon in Main South. Tonight, I waited in line then knelt down and said a prayer for this mans son, then I walked toward his dad and introduced myself as Art Innamoratis daughter. I will never forget the look on his face, and how delighted he was to see me...how much my presence there meant to him. He raced to introduced me to his daughter, his nieces, his sons longtime partner. He scrambled to find a piece of paper and a pen so I could share my contact information, all the while saying, Your father was a great man...I loved that guy... He was like a brother to me...I worried so much about him. It was true-- every time I visited Dad, his phone would ring and Vito would be on the other end. Im delighted I got a chance to meet him, and put a smile on his face during an otherwise very sad day. I dont read the obits every day, and I wouldnt have recognized his sons name. I think my hands were Dads hands as I flipped through the paper that day, and he used MY feet to walk into that funeral home...
