was the reed from radipole lake used for thatching around about the early 1960s. the reason I am asking is because at that time my dad was farming at east chickerell court at the bottom of radipole lane. I would of been around 6 years old and can remember dad collecting straw bales from whitcombe and building a rick opposite the speedway track that was thatched by himself and the other workers on the farm, they may of been the brothers highfield from I think devon road near the golf course. at the time it was probably fairly common to do this, but looking back it is a rare thing. all the hay baled on the farm was as far as I can remember stacked manually in barns so no room undercover for straw. so basically was radipole reed used a lot and why does it not get used now, or is reed from this area not longlasting enough.
