éirígí North Antrim and the Irish Republican Martyrs Committee - TopicsExpress

éirígí North Antrim and the Irish Republican Martyrs Committee (IRMCC) held their annual Roger Casement Commemoration at Murlough Bay on Saturday August 2nd. Máire Drumm, Chairperson of the IRMCC spoke of the significance of Casement, his humanitarian work, his role in the Gaelic League and his part in the 1916 Easter Rising. Drumm then repeated calls made in previous years, that Casements dying wish, to be buried in Murlough Bay, in the beautiful Glens of Antrim be respected. Drumm said, In disregard for Casement’s dying wish, the Free State government, when seeking the repatriation of Casement’s body from Pentonville prison in the 1960s, conceded to a British government demand that Casement’s remains would not be re-interred anywhere in the Six Counties. Casements body now lies in Glasnevin Cemetery in Dublin, instead of his desired burial plot here in his beloved Glens. Let us remember Casement stated before his execution ‘When they have done with me, do not leave my body in this dreadful place. Take me back to Murlough and let my bones lie there.’ We call for that request to be respected, and for Casement to be buried in his chosen place, Murlough Bay. A wreath was then laid on behalf of both the IRMCC, and éirígí in North Antrim. ENDS
