넬로가 2000프랑이 든 지갑을 찾아주고 떠난 후, 파트라슈는 음식과 온기를 거부한다. Patrasche vainly spent the fury of his anguish against the iron-bound oak of the barred house-door. They did not dare unbar the door and let him forth : they tried all they could to solace him. They brought him sweet cakes and juicy meats : they tempted him with the best they had : they tried to lure him to abide by the warmth of the hearth : but it was of no avail. Patrasche refused to be comforted or to stir from the barred portal. He said with an ashen cheek and a quiver in his stern voice. “We have looked with lanterns everywhere : it is gone – the little maiden’s portion and all!” (“알루아의 몫까지 모두 사라졌어!”) 안주인은 실의에 빠져있는 코제에게 돈을 건네면서 어떻게 지갑이 되돌아왔는지를 설명한다. 완고했던 코제는 두려움으로 침몰한다. The strong man sank trembling into a seat and covered his face, ashamed and almost afraid. “I have been cruel to the lad,” he muttered at length : “I deserved not to have good at his hands.” (완고한 사내는 무너지듯 주저앉아 얼굴을 가리고 부들부들 떨었다. 부끄러움에 두렵기까지 했다. “소년에게 못되게 굴었는데.” 마침내 그가 말했다. “나는 도움을 받을 자격이 없어.”) 기회를 엿보던 알루아가 아버지에게 가만히 다가가 넬로와 다시 친구가 돼도 괜찮은지를 묻는다. 그는 대답한다. “Surely, surely. He shall bide here on Christmas Day, and other day he will. There were light and warmth and abundance everywhere, and the child would fain have made the dog a guest honored and feasted. Famished he was and very cold, but without Nello he would partake neither of comfort nor food. Against all temptation he was proof, and close against the door he leaned always, watching only for a means of escape. “He wants the lad,” said Baas Cogez. “Good dog! Good dog! I will go over to the lad the first thing at day-dawn.” (그러나 파트라슈는 따뜻함도 즐거움도 나누려고 하지 않았다. 내내 굶주린 개는 매우 추웠지만 넬로가 함께 하지 않으면 온기도 음식도 거부했다. 개는 모든 유혹을 뿌리치고 의리를 지켰고, 줄곧 잠긴 문가에서 탈출할 방법을 찾고 있었다. “그는 소년을 원하는구나.” 코제가 말했다. “좋은 개구나! 좋은 개야! 새벽이 밝으면 소년에게 가봐야겠어.”) For no one but Patrasche knew that Nello had left the hut, and no one but Patrasche divined that Nello had gone to face starvation and miserly alone. Alois, gleeful and sure of her playmate back on the morrow, bounded and sang and tossed back her yellow hair. Baas Cogez, in the fullness of his heart, smiled on her through moistened eyes, and spoke of the way in which he would befriend her favorite companion; the house-mother sat with calm, contented face at the spinning-wheel; the cuckoo in the clock chirped mirthful hours. Amidst it all Patrasche was bidden with a thousand words of welcome to tarry there a cherished guest. But neither peace nor plenty could allure him where Nello was not. (방앗간 부엌은 아주 따뜻했다. 난로에서 커다란 통나무가 탁탁 소리를 내면서 활활 타오르고 있었다. 이웃들은 구운 거위고기와 와인으로 저녁을 먹으려고 방문했다. 알루아는 내일이면 넬로가 다시 올 거라고 의심하지 않으며 금발을 찰랑이면서 기쁘게 뛰어다니고 노래했다. 코제가 딸을 촉촉한 눈으로 바라보며 마음이 벅차올라 미소지었다. 그리고는 딸이 가장 좋아하는 친구와 친해질 방법을 얘기했다. 안주인은 만족스러운 표정으로 물레 곁에 조용히 앉아있었다. 뻐꾸기 시계는 시간마다 즐겁게 재잘거렸다. 그런 중에, 그곳에 귀한 손님으로 머물게 된 파트라슈에게 천 마디의 환영사가 쏟아졌다. 하지만, 넬로가 없는 곳에서의 안온함도 풍성함도 개는 흥미가 없었다.) 왁자지껄한 식탁에서 알루아가 선물을 받고 있을 때, 문가에서 탈출할 기회만 엿보고 있던 개는 마침내 방앗간 집을 빠져나온다. 조심성 없는 새로운 손님이 빗장 잠그는 걸 잊었던 것이다. 파트라슈는 지치고 쇠약해진 다리가 버틸 수 있는 한, 혹독하고 어두운 밤 the bitter, the black night 속을 최대한 발리 질주했다. 개는 넬로와 할아버지를 처음 만났던 그때를 떠올리고 있었다. He had only one thought – to follow Nello. A human friend might have paused for the pleasant meal, the cheery warmth, the cosey slumber; but that was not the friendship of Patrasche. He remembered a bygone time, when an old man and a little child had found him sick unto death in the wayside ditch. (개는 넬로를 따라가야 한다는 한 가지 생각뿐이었다. 사람이었다면 맛있는 음식과 즐거운 온기,아늑한 잠자리를 위해 멈췄을 지도 모른다. 하지만 개의 우정은 그런 것이 아니었다. 그는 지난 시간을 떠올리고 있었다. 할아버지와 어린 아이가 길가 배수로에서 고된 노동과 탈수증으로 죽어가던 자신을 발견했던 그때를.)
