Clara Emily Bacon Upper Nappan, Cumberland Co., NS It is with great sadness the Family announces the peaceful passing of Clara Emily Bacon on Sunday, September 29th, 2013 surrounded by her loving family. Born in Waweig, Charlotte Co., NB, she was the daughter of the late Albert and Uzilla (Nixon) Hawthorne. She lived in Upper Nappan all her married life. She worked for the Inspection Board of the United Kingdom and Canada as a Shell Inspector at Robbs Engineering in Amherst during the war years. She was a past member of the Ladies Curling Club in Amherst, a member of the Amherst Golf Club, Honorary Life Membership to the Progressive Conservative Womens Association of Cumberland East, Past Honorary President of the Womens Institutes of Nova Scotia, and a member of the Nappan United Church. She is survived by her beloved and devoted husband Roger of 68 years, a son Douglas (Diane) Bacon of Upper Nappan, daughters – Diana (Bruce Saunders) and Deborah (Cecil Carter) of Amherst. Seven Grandchildren – Jason, Adam, Patricia, Christa, Amy, Andrea, and Celine; and 13 Great-Grandchildren - Adam, Kirkland, Brooklynn, Cooper, Cole, Heather, Francis, Tyler, Nora, John, Callum, Isla, and Finley. She is survived by her Sister Dorothy Bryant (the late Don Bryant) of Belle River, Ontario, and is predeceased by her brothers Keith (Caroline) Hawthorne of Toronto, and Arthur (Marguerite) Hawthorne of Moncton, NB, and Step-Brother Gordon (Aileen) Carr. Clara enjoyed life to the fullest and loved to work in her garden – especially her rose bed. She spent many years curling and represented the Amherst Curling Club in provincial mixed and ladies bonspiels. At the Amherst Golf Course, she had fun with her golfing buddies and - following 9 holes of golf - lunch in the clubhouse - and especially Janey’s sweet potato fries. Clara was very active – happily attending any events she was invited to –dinner theatre, invitations to family dinners, and many community fundraising events. Everyone gathered at Clara and Roger’s for big family occasions – birthday parties, Christmas, Easter, New Years, and Thanksgiving for lots of fun and food. In her younger years, she raised turkeys and worked in the blueberry fields to earn money to purchase furniture for the home. Clara was talented sewing all her children’s clothes when they were younger and made many quilts in her lifetime – and baby quilts to welcome new grandchildren and great-grandchildren – which are cherished. She fully supported Roger’s political career – enjoying and attending hundreds of political events, agricultural exhibitions, fairs, and farming events – all at his side. They were a real team! She was also very fond of the peacocks at the farm – keeping them in a continuous supply of peanuts. They would visit her every evening looking for their peanuts. She loved her cats Missy and Mittens – and the farm cats always got extra treats. Her heart was kind and she had a life well lived. Clara’s personal thoughts: "To Roger – Roger has always been a devoted, loving, and caring husband. I could not have wished for any better husband." "To Douglas – One special son – Douglas – that "Mother" always loved." "To Diana and Debbie – two special loving and caring daughters whom I love dearly. "To the grandchildren and great grandchildren – I was very happy to be a grandmother to all my special grandchildren and great-grandchildren. They have all been very special and good to me." The Family would like to express their gratitude for the wonderful care provided by the Cumberland Regional Health Care Centre – Dr.K. Bienkowski, Dr. J. Krol-Lass, Dr. G. MacDonald, Dr. T. Wallace, Dr. Short - and especially the Nurses in Surgical and Palliative Care. Funeral Service will be held at Furlong Jones Funeral Home on Thursday, October 3rd, 2013 at 2 pm. Visiting hours are from 2-4 pm and 7 – 9 pm on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013 at the funeral home.
