-- UNDERSTANDING THE CREATIVE-ARTISTIC PROCESS -- by Garnet Troy Rossi June 2013 A Lecture in preparation for the LPAC Summit In New York City, June 2013 *** A lot of people often ask me if art, creativity, artistic endeavours, poetry writing, novels, music-song (especially classcial music and sheet music), biomedical machinery, archetectural designs, inventions, ETC are all expressions of wisdom, logic, rationality, love, beauty, undeniable truths ... OR ... sensory perception. I hope this equation will answer this question : Creativity = art = artistry = new discoveries = human progress = human / social / community development = evolving to the higher state of life and of being = life is the great power = the willfully creative human mind is even more powerful and indeed is the greatest power of all = even theologically speaking, humans were created higher than the angels, according to the Bible = a lot of love and attention to detail went into creating you and me and all that we see around us, in fact love is all around you, you CANNOT escape love no matter how much you want to run away from it or even try to deny it or its very existence, and so it is with engineers and musicians and poets and novelists and canvas painters , all who pour all their hearts and love and attention to detail on their creations, the physical products of their willfully creative minds = my paintings are a physical manifestation of all the love that i see around me and i see love and logic and beauty in all things, because love and logic and beauty are eternal truths = everything you see around you has a specific shape and functionality, and was created / programmed / manufactured for a specific reason or purpose, therefore, even God is said to be the most logical rational loving caring being and these are seen in the beauty and functionality of all the creations of the deity. Let me now elaborate. Indeed, all religious scriptures of all world religions explicitly state that the godhead is the fountainhead of all love, logic, rationality, wisdom, and beauty. In ancient times, the Greek word "PRAXIS" (πρᾶξις) referred to the process of practical implementation of messages from the gods. Praxis is the process by which a theory, lesson, or skill is enacted, practiced, embodied, or realised. "Praxis" may also refer to the act of engaging, applying, exercising, realizing, or practicing ideas. This has been a recurrent topic in the field of philosophy, discussed in the writings of Plato and Aristotle. Since the godhead was the fountainhead of all love, logic, rationality, wisdom, and beauty, ergo PRAXIS was the natural sequential logical progression of creativity which was itself based on AND a product of logic, rationality, wisdom, and the love of beauty. So you would go from inception / idea to creativity / creation to practical implementation. So engineering, mathematics, architecture, biology, astronomy, medicine, sciences were a big deal. So was the arts, poetry, music, sculpting. Since Hermes was the messenger of the gods who brought messages to humans, including an IDEA or INCEPTION leading to the creative process and the creation of a man-made object or play or song or poem, it was widely assumed that artists and poets were special to the gods because they spoke directly to the gods and were able to interpret the messages from the gods, the interpretation of these messages LEADING to inception / idea that led to creativity / creation that led to Praxis / practice. Hence, the god Apollo became god of music, song, medicine, and the lyre. Cupid was the god of Love. His mother Aphrodite became the goddess of beauty and plays. Almost every god represented a musical instrument, a skill, a talent. Each of these gods had a temple and a class of priests. Today, the word HERMENEUTICS applies to the interpretation of wisdom, rationality, and logic that are part and parcel of creativity and praxis. In other words, "hermeneutics", a word that comes from Hermes, essentially refers to the interpretation-understanding the creative human mind, of the process by which humans understand creativity, logic, rationality, wisdom, love, and appreciation of beauty. Appreciating and loving the beauty that surrounds us leads us to the creative process without which there would be no progress and advancement of the human condition and human society. Hermeneutics became a philosophical tool in modern times because of the work of Martin Heidegger and Hans-Georg Gadamer. Hermeneutics and praxis are the one-two punch of the creative process and of the artistic mind. Take a close look at YOURSELF: you were created for a specific purpose with a specific physical shape and attributes, which makes you the individual literally a work of art with your own innate beauty! Everything you see is a product of love and logic and is a work of art and is beautiful in its own special way. Yes, even sharks and snakes and creepy crawly things, even the lowly worm and the ant, are special and beautiful in their own way and were created to be efficient and productive in a very logical sense. For example a snake is perfectly suited for its own habitat / ecosystem where is is at or near the top of the food chain. Take a look at the 4 bars of sheet music , take a close look at the musical notes that are imprinted on these 4 bars, and you can see right away see that music , esp sheet music, is very logical and have the precision of mathematics !! Small wonder that music classes and musical instruments attract students of physics, math, the sciences, and as well logic, philosophy, and critical thinking... The creative and loving human mind is a higher form of existence then sense perception ... poems, music / songs, canvas art, architectural wonders , engineering feats, biomedical machines, sculptures, ETC , all of these are products of the human mind...and therefore art and creativity CANNOT be a product of sense perception ... they are instead used to quantify and qualify sense perception!! They are NOT a product of sense perception. Sense perception is in constant flux, it is not the reality, therefore the human mind is not an accumulation of sensory perceptions, the human mind is a higher form of existence, it is based on logic, rationality, wisdom, love, beauty, love and appreaction of beauty, the real truths, truths that are universally undeniable and beyond all doubt ... let us not forget that even in the biblical context, the Bible states that human beings were created with such love and attention to detail that this new creation was made even higher than the angels causing one-third of angels to rebel against God. The greatest powers in the universe are the power of Love and the power of logic and creativity...and all three forces are behind the mechanics of the willfully loving AND creative human mind! .
