08 December 2014 Year after year and for over half a century, the Miss World competition attracts billions of viewers from around the globe. This continuing international fixation in Miss World is testament to the organization’s constant aim to introduce new innovations and improvements to each event every year. However, what has truly made the global competition withstand the test of time is the unchanging essence of Miss World, and while many fans have tried to pinpoint what exactly a winner should represent, we want to know from the contestants what they believe is the true timeless essence of a Miss World. Megan working alongside the Red Cross after Typhoon Haiyan which devastated the Philippines in November 2013 In your opinion, what is the essence of a Miss World? Miss World 2013 Megan Young: I believe the essence of a Miss World is somebody with a kind heart, somebody willing to work hard, and somebody with an understanding mind. Simple as that. Netherlands: Miss World is humble, compassionate, and trustworthy to all whom she meets but she also has her own opinions and convictions. She is strong and forward thinking but knows to put others first. This is the essence that makes her truly special. Switzerland: For me, every Miss World represents a new story and a new legacy. She should be the face of change to the world in a positive way. Switzerland What would winning the Miss World mean to you and your country? Sri Lanka: No Miss Sri Lanka has ever been crowned Miss World and a lot of my people have lost faith that we can achieve this goal. I want to change this and give a voice to my country. If I am crowned Miss World, I want to show to my country that together we can achieve anything. Denmark: Becoming Miss World would be a dream come true and it would be an honor to represent the organization. For Denmark, it would be the first time they would ever have a Miss World and I know they would be so incredibly proud of me. Equatorial Guinea Equatorial Guinea: It would mean so, so much to me and my country to be crowned Miss World. This is only the 3rd time Equatorial Guinea has been in Miss World and if I win, I want to show to the people in my country that we are strong and to always have faith in things they believe. There are a lot of handicapped people in my country and I want to reach them and inspire them to always follow their dreams and no matter the obstacle they may face, anything is possible. Do you have any advice for young girls hoping to compete in Miss World? Haiti: The first advice is to believe in yourself and your authenticity and to believe in the magic of this world and that you are here for a reason. Stay true to who you are and I promise that you can accomplish anything. South Sudan South Sudan: There is a lot of stigma put on Sudanese girls that the color of our skin is a setback. There is a lot of skin bleaching going on and my advice is to always believe in yourself and to love yourself. This advice is for anything in life, whether to be Miss World or to succeed in your career. Listen to yourself and don’t seek approval from anyone but yourself and then nothing can tear you down. New Zealand: In New Zealand, young girls are afraid of trying new things because they are scared to come out of their comfort zones. By participating in Miss World I have become so passionate about charities and public speaking. I recommend that any girl hoping to achieve the Miss World crown push to their limits and give everything a go. This experience has changed my life and it can change yours too.
