10 OClock Teacher Question! Jessie writes: Hi teachers! I am a fairly new substitute teacher. I was wondering how other substitutes handle the thats not how we do things comment. Recently I was in a classroom and a child was very upset to the point where he couldnt do his work. I was gentle and suggested he read a book in the library center until he was ready. This worked well for him, but he was very persistent at first and kept saying we dont do that here. I just insisted on reading a book. Any suggestions on appropriate wording without disrespecting their rules?
