11 Doctors On Trial For Professional Misconduct olajohnson— March 20, 2014 For carrying out various offences contrary to the ethics of their profession, 11 medical doctors were yesterday arraigned before the Disciplinary Tribunal of the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) for trial. One of the arraigned doctors being tried is the medical director, Taraba State Specialist Hospital, Dr Zakari Aliyu, who was alleged to have divulged information to the press on the health status of Governor Danbaba Suntai contrary to the ethics of his profession. Another is a senior medical officer of the Cottage Hospital, Ekpene Obo village, Akwa Ibom, Dr David Emmanuel Udo, who allegedly diverted patients to his private clinic when he is not licenced to do so. He is being arraigned on a six count charge of owning a private clinic, diverting patients to his clinic, carrying out a major surgery on one Mrs Imaobong Ime Archibong and releasing her medical history which is confidential to be published. Others include a paediatric surgeon and owner of a private hospital, Abram Vineyard Clinic, Enugu, Dr Godwin, who is being tried on a three-count charge of negligently performing a major surgery of prostatectomy on one Mr Alexandra Chibueze without keeping proper record of the management of the patient. However, when the case was called, Dr Godwin said he did not enlist any attorney to represent him as he would be doing so himself. Unfortunately, the case was adjourned because witnesses were absent for the trail. He pleaded not guilty. The chairman of the disciplinary tribunal, Dr Jonathan Uzoatuegwu, said the tribunal would dispense justice in a professional respect in the matter.
