18, 2013 ‘NHA endeavouring for construction of highways’ Staff Report ISLAMABAD: National Highway Authority (NHA) Chairman Maroof Afzal has said NHA is a wonderful organisation, which is endeavouring hard for construction of national highways, motorways and expressways throughout the country. Pak-China Economic Corridor and Lahore-Karachi Motorway are challenging projects of the future. He was presiding over NHA’s Executive Board meeting here on Tuesday. Afzal said total length of NHA network is more than 12,000 kilometres, which is only 7.0 percent of the total roads of the country. However 80 percent transportation of the country is carried out through NHA’s network. He said that we need to improve internal working system of NHA. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif is taking keen interest in Pak-China Economic Corridor and Lahore-Karachi Motorway. These projects, he said, will not only pave the way for socio-economic development, but will also perform key role in regional trade activity. With regard to the realisation of mega projects, NHA will come up to the expectations of the people and the government. Better perception of NHA will be created on the basis of its performance, he added. The meeting reviewed feasibility studies of Pak-China Economic Corridor, Lahore-Karachi Motorway and Muzaffarabad-Mirpur-Mangla Expressway projects. These projects will provide firm economic foundation to the country, and pace of agricultural and industrial development will be geared up. The meeting also discussed various aspects of gigantic Lowari Tunnel Project. The length of the main Tunnel is 8,500 metres while highway Tunnel is 1,900 metres long. The project is expected to be completed by October 2017. Construction of Lowari Tunnel is a long- standing demand of the people of Chitral as it will provide all weather links between Chitral and rest of the country. The meeting was told that security arrangements are being made for Chinese engineers and workers engaged on Thakot Bridge-Raikot Section of Karakoram Highway. The administrative and financial affairs were also discussed of the authority in the meeting.
