2. Bank of Maharashtra bags best bank award i. Bank of Maharashtra was conferred “Best Bank – Public Sector” award in BFSI Awards-2014 by World HRD Congress in recognition of its performance in Banking category, the bank said in a statement. ii. The award focuses on the best practices of the BFSI Industry based on the Strategy, Security, Customer Service and the Future Technology Challenges and Innovations. iii. Apart from Best Bank-Public Sector award, the bank has also won 4 other awards -- Bank with Most Admired Services; Bank with Best Customer Orientation; Bank with Best Technology Orientation; and Corporate Communication Award. 3. Deepak Mohanty Committee on data and info management to address gaps i. Seeking to address data gap problems, a Reserve Bank of India (RBI) panel made a case on Tuesday, for compilation of separate indices on producer price, labour force survey, urban wages, retail sales, construction activity survey and household indebtedness with a view to improve monetary policy formulation. ii. The RBI panel headed by RBI Executive Director Deepak Mohanty in a statement issued in Mumbai said, with increasing integration with the global economy and the growing complexity of the economic structure, information needs have increased considerably and data gaps are being experienced in various domains of central banking. iii. The panel suggested that the scope and coverage of the financial soundness indicators may be expanded to non-bank segments of the financial sector. The frequency of compiling sectoral flow of funds may be made quarterly starting with the financial sector. iv. It also suggested standardising various attributes and dimensions of data. It recommended the use of extensible Business Reporting Language (XBRL) as the principal vehicle for data submission. 4. France announceed to provide 1 billion Euros credit line to India i. France announced to provide one billion Euros (8200 crore rupees) line of credit over a three years period to India. The announcement was made by French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius who is on a visit to India. ii. The line of credit will help India take initiative in the climate control area and enable India to work closely with France on the issue of climate change. iii. The credit will be offered through the Agnece Francaise de development (French Development Agency) for creation of sustainable infrastructure and urban development in India. iv. Earlier, Fabius held talks with his counterpart Sushma Swaraj on the crucial issue of climate change. He said that his country was looking forward to make the Paris Climate Change Conference of the UN in December 2015 a success one. 5. Sharp rise in incidence of cyber crimes in India; Maharashtra, AP top the list i. There has been a sharp increase in the incidence of cyber crimes in the country. The number of cases registered in 2013 under the IT Act has gone up by 52 per cent at 4,192 as against 2,761 in the previous year. ii. Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh (undivided) have topped the list with 681 and 635 persons, respectively in cases under the IT Act, both showing almost 50 per cent of growth in cyber crimes over the previous year. In the previous year, Maharashtra registered 471 and Andhra Pradesh 429. iii. According to the latest data provided by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the official chronicler of crimes of all sorts in the country, cyber crimes registered under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) has shown much higher growth rate of 122 per cent in 2013 over the previous year’s figure. The IPC cases went up to 1,316 in 2013 from 595 in the previous year. Maharashtra topped the list here too with the cops booking 226 cases in this category. IV. The other States with high number of cases booked under the IT Act include Karnataka (513), Kerala (349), Madhya Pradesh (282) and Rajasthan (239). Gujarat showed a decline with the number coming down to 61 from 68 in the previous year. 6. World Bank Group sanctions $150,000 grant to GNRC i. The World Bank Group (WBG) has granted GNRC, which was formerly known as Guwahati Neurological Research Centre a grant of $150,000. ii. WBG, through its India Development Marketplace (IDM) initiative, chose to present this grant during a conference and workshop on development marketplace in Guwahati, according to a statement by the WBG. iii. “Inclusive businesses have the potential to provide innovative and sustainable last mile delivery solutions in assisting the under-served. Linking these early- stage enterprises to next-stage financing through grant support and advisory services will refine and strengthen their business models and ensure their sustainable impact over the long-term. iv. The focus of 2014 India Development Marketplace in northeast India will help support inclusive growth in this priority region”, said Sinha. 7. Kochi: Mohammed Hanish is Nodal Officer for FIFA in 2017 i. Kerala Government has appointed senior IAS officer A P M Mohammed Hanish as Nodal Officer for the matches likely to beld in Kochi during the 2017 FIFA under-17 world cup football. The appointment is as per FIFA’s direction, a Kerala Football Association press release said. ii. The official has also been entrusted with overseeing the infrastructure and development of soccer in the run up to hosting the event. Hanish is the Kerala Roads and Bridges Managing Director. 8. Jajodia set to be elected Boxing India chief i. Business house Monnet Ispat head Sandeep Jajodia i s all set to become the president of AIBA-approved Boxing India in its election to be held in Mumbai on July 9, according to a senior official of the group. ii . Boxing India was handed provisional recognition by the International Boxing Federation (AIBA) in May after Indian Boxing Federation was suspended in December 2012 before being terminated earlier this year for failing to adhere to AIBA’s diktat of holding fresh elections and adopting a revamped constitution. iii. Since 2008, Monnet Ispat has been sponsoring boxing as a Corporate Social Responsibility activity. We (Monnet Ispat) have not ventured into any other sport and have been committed to boxing for the last six years with Jajodia as the head of the company. “So, it is natural that he will be looked upon as a choice to be fit for the president’s post of boxing federation.” 9. Jitu Rai is the world’s No 1 air pistol shooter i. After winning three medals in the ISSF World Cups in Munich and Slovenia recently, in-form Indian shooter Jitu Rai on Tuesday achieved the world’s number one ranking in air pistol event. ii. The 27-year-old army man from Lucknow is the seventh Indian shooter to have achieved this feat. Anjali Bhagwat, Rajyavardhan Rathore, Gagan Narang, Manavjit Singh Sandhu, Ronjon Sodhi and Heena Sidhu are the others to have claimed the number one position in their respective events. iii. Jitu Rai has been ranked number one shooter in air pistol event in the world ranking. The ISSF has released the world ranking of shooters in various events today and Jitu Rai was declared the number one shooter,” the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) said in a statement. 10. Using ATMs outside the home branch network may cost you i. The Reserve Bank of India is in the process of deciding if banks can charge a fee for using automated teller machines (ATMs) to withdraw money outside the home bank ATM network. Home bank network means ATMs of the bank in which you have an account. ii. The Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has suggested to the RBI that customers who withdraw money from other banks ATMs should be charged. iii. A Krishnakumar, Managing Director, State Bank of India, said, “The IBA has made a request to the RBI to rationalise ATM charges in urban and metro areas.” iv. If accepted, this would mean that customers will have to pay a fee for using ATMs other than the home branch ATM for withdrawing money from the very first transaction (against five free transactions allowed in a month now at other bank ATMs). According to estimates, this charge could be as high as ₹ 20 per transaction. v. This issue took centre-stage late last year after the law enforcement authorities directed banks to provide security at their ATMs, after a woman was attacked in Bangalore. 11. Former French President Sarkozy charged with corruption & influence peddling i. Frances former President Nicolas Sarkozy has been charged with corruption and influence peddling. This was stated by French prosecutors in a statement today. ii. The decision came after Sarkozy was questioned for 15 hours, marking the first time a French ex-head of state had been taken into custody in a criminal investigation. iii. The leader had been detained at a police station in a Paris suburb in connection with a suspected attempt to illegally influence judicial proceedings in one of a raft of colourful corruption cases he is implicated in.
