2 December 1804-Napoleon I is crowned Emperor of France by Pope Pius VII. 1805-Napoloen I destroys the Russian and Austrian armies at Austerlitz. 1823-President Monroe introduces the Monroe Doctrine. 1851-Newly elected President Charles Louis Bonaparte overthrows the Second French Republic. 1852-The Second Empire is proclaimed with Napoleon III as Emperor. 1859-John Brown is executed for treason. Brown led an abortive raid on the Federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in October. 1941-Code phrase Climb Mt. Nitaka is transmitted to the Imperial Japanese Fleet; all forces are to be in place to launch attacks on Pearl Harbor and Singapore by 7/8 December. 1942-Enrico Fermi creates the first nuclear chain reaction at the University of Chicago. 1944- Luftwaffe launches a devastating attack against Anglo-American ships at the port of Bari, Italy. 105 Ju88 bombers strike the ships, skilfully using chaff to confuse the Allied radar operators, they find the port packed with brightly lit Allied shipping. The result was the most destructive air raid on Allied shipping since the attack on Pearl Harbor. Hits were scored on two ammunition ships and a tanker. Burning oil and exploding ammunition spread over the harbour. Some 16 ships were sunk and eight damaged, and the port was put out of action for three weeks. Moreover, one of the ships sunk, SS John Harvey, had been carrying mustard gas, which enveloped the port in a cloud of poisonous vapors. 1954-Senate censors McCarthy. 1960-Fidel Castro declares himself a Marxist-Leninist who will lead Cuba Communism. 1970-The Environmental Protection Agency begins operations. 1971-UAE is formed. 1971-President Khan of Pakistan sends a letter to President Nixon formally invoking article 1 of the 1959 US-Pakistan aid treaty; crisis between India and Pakistan over East Pakistan is slipping into war. 1972-Labour wins for the first time in Australia since 1949; the duty falls upon Her Majestys representative, the Governor-General, to invite Gough Whitlam to become prime minister and to form a government in her name. 1979-Voters in Iran give Khomeni absolute power.
