20) Among The Sleep by Krillbite. Frankly, 2014 was a miserable year for videogames. Due to the release of new systems Playstation 4 and Xbox One, most developers and publishers played it safe with a raft of uninspired sequels and remakes. The few new IPs that came out were mostly disappointing, and even the indie scene didnt manage to break the mold (though I must admit to not having played recent critical darling The Talos Principle yet). Artistically speaking, only two games were worth mentioning this year: Left Behind, a beautiful and clever prequel to last years game of the year The Last Of Us, and Among The Sleep, a toddler simulator by new Swedish studio Krillbite. Well, toddler nightmare simulator more like. In Among The Sleep, you are cast in the role of a two-year-old who gets lost in varying dreamscapes, which, in the tradition of some of the greatest childrens literature, cleverly allude to real-life issues and fears like parental abuse, absence and abandonment. The most interesting aspect of Among The Sleep is the feeling of helplessness it engenders. You are just a small child after all: you cant really do anything besides crawling and hiding. In a clever touch, you can sprint for about five meters before falling down to your hands and knees again, and the world looms large from your knee-high viewpoint. There has been much call for more varied protagonists in gaming, and you cant ask for a much more original choice than a hero who hasnt even been potty-trained. That Krillbite manages to tell a poignant story about dysfunctional parenting with their horror adventure makes their success all the more deserved. https://youtube/watch?v=0EAeewMmM_k
