22 November 1972: Samuel Porter, 30-year-old Protestant, married with 2 children, a plasterer and a part-time member of the UDR holding the rank of Private was from Ballinahone. PVT. Porter came off duty and was shot by the IRA near his home. Around 3:00AM he was reversing his car into the driveway of his home when gunmen opened fire on him. The gunmen had been waiting for him. One of the several shot that were fired at him hit him in the head and he tumbled from his car. His Alsatian dog was inside his kennel and was poisoned earlier by PVT. Porters killers. His wife and daughters were sleeping during the attack. PVT. Porters body was found early in the morning by a neighbour who had come to take 1 of his daughters to school. The neighbour saw the car with a smashed window and the drivers door open. PVT, Porter was lying outside the car with his Browning pistol still in his pocket. An army spokesman said after the killing: this is another example of how cowardly and how low these killers can stoop. Shots were fired at the house the previous February. PVT. Porter worked for a firm of Desertmarting building contractors. He was a former member of the B Specials. LEST WE FORGET!
