3.2.5 IN-SITU TESTING 3.2.5.1 S TANDARDPENETRATIONTESTING Standard penetration tests were carried out at intervals of 3.0m and the test was carry out in accordance to BS 1337:1990. The SPT test service for the following purposes: a) to determine the relative density or consistency of soils, and b) to recover disturbed samples for visual inspection. This empirical dynamic penetration test determines the resistance of soils to the penetration of a split barrel sampler of 50mm external diameter, driven by a 65 kg automatic drop ha mmer, allowing a free fall of 760mm. The penetration resistance, N is the number of blows required to ef fect a 300mm penetration below the seating drive which is, for this project, ta ken as completed at 25 blows or 150mm penetration. The values of N obtained in this investigation are recorded in borehole logs attached in the APPENDIX C . 3.2.6 S OIL SAMPLING All undisturbed samples were taken at depths indica ted by the clients Engineer, waxed at both ends and labelled properly before transporti ng to the laboratory for testing.
