#31for21 day 7: One therapy Maggie has been getting for 18 months is Speech therapy. I remember thinking...shes only 6 months old...WHY on earth does she need speech therapy. Well, I soon found out! The driving force behind speaking and eating is strength. Children with Down syndrome have low muscle tone. This is why they have to work harder on everything!! The first thing our therapist did was work on positioning. This was necessary to make sure Maggie was using her muscles properly and wouldnt tire easily. Then we slowly started introducing baby food. Speech therapy is also about proper eating and drinking techniques. Maggie has had some stomach issues that have made the transition to table food very delayed, and it is something we are currently working on!! Some children with Down syndrome take longer to advance to solids. Some are eating champs. All I know is that without speech therapy in cooperation with nutrition, I would have been lost! It has been such an important part of Maggies development. And I have these 2 ladies to thank: Connie and Cindy! Thank you for getting us here!!
