3rd XI Practice Match - THIS SUNDAY, 21 September vs Brunswick at Fairbairn Park Key notes and non-negotiables (if selected in this side - you must note/adhere): - for many of the players selected in this game, this is the first time you are playing under my on-field leadership so these advance notes are ABSOLUTELY critical (the likes of Rhys Ashen and Nick Brandt are well versed in my expectations and how we go about things and will also set standards for others to follow) - the team for Sunday is a blended team with some players competing for Round 1 VSDCA 2nd XI places and others playing lower XIs (4th or 5th XI). 2 key points; 1) we hold ourselves and prepare to the highest standard, not lowest, and 2) irrespective of what grade you may play Round 1, if you are a batsmen - I will give you a bat and, if you are a bowler - I will give you a bowl. Practice matches are not just about the result but getting overs into bowlers and allowing batsmen to hit balls. Irrespective of grade you may play Round 1, I will try and give all bowlers and batsmen a go to assist with your individual match readiness - arrival time is 9:30am. This is the time you are to be unpacked, dressed, on the field and ready for warm-up. You can never be early, only late. I have very little tolerance for those who are tardy on match day - you are to be wearing the correct attire; clean creams/white, club headwear, club training/warm-up shirt - all players are to bring their own food/drinks - I have arranged a scorer to assist on the day in Lee Elms. All players are expected to take 20 seconds to thank Lee. This is NOT a job Lee has to do but she is prepared to assist for the betterment of the players. Never take volunteer work for granted and all players should extend thanks to Lee - as we have 14/15 players on the day, we will Umpire our own game when batting. If ever asked to Umpire, you will do so. This extends to any job such as running out drinks to batsmen, etc - if asked to do something, you will jump onto it for the betterment of your team and your team mates - once we commence our warm-up, mentally and physically we bring an intent to the standard that we would in any game. I have zero tolerance for players going through the motions during warm-up. We switch on as soon as warm-up starts and bring intent and commitment from this point. We will always prepare, pre-game, at the standard of a VSDCA 1st XI side - EVERY player will be assigned an individual role by myself during the game (batsmen and bowlers). I understand and expect that skill errors, mistakes will happen and this is perfectly acceptable. I will never have a go at someone for a skill error or a mistake. However, I will not tolerate individuals ignoring a role that they have been assigned and doing their own thing (ie a bowler may be asked to bowl defensive lines outside off-stump for a 5 over spell yet they decide to go pole hunting with different variations every ball, bouncers, etc. This is unacceptable) - if you are a medium fast bowler, I expect you to show initiative during your spell and seek feedback from Rhys Ashen (who will be happy to help you). As a bowler, you have a 50 game VSDCA 1st XI opening bowler at your disposal - use him - anyone who has ever played under me knows one thing - you never lack communication or direction. I will always spend significant time with the group on direction/instructions as well as each individual - I expect at all times that we compete as hard as we can and that, even if on the sidelines, your 100% attention is dedicated to the game and your team mates. Players may sometimes comment; I play to have fun. This is fine as you know what is fun - putting in a good account of yourself and allowing yourself to have pride in your performance and how you acquitted yourself. That is what is fun - whilst we will talk as a ground and individually on Sunday, the above lays out non negotiable standards and expectations and everyone will benefit by simply understanding what is expected and complying Batting line-up for Sunday (ensuring that irrespective of grade you play Round 1, batsmen are given a go to hit some balls in preparation): 1.
