4-km queue of vehicles in Matnog port blocks relief trucks to Leyte Published : Saturday, November 16, 2013 00:00 Article Views : 65 Written by : Sonny Sales LEGAZPI City -- A four-kilometer queue of trailer trucks, private vehicles and passenger buses at Matnog Port toward the crossing of Magdalena, Sorsogon, is delaying the transport of relief goods to Samar and Leyte by at least 48 hours, sources at the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) regional office in Rawis, Legazpi City reported yesterday. PPA Port Service Division chief Medardo C. Adille quoted PPA Matnog Port Manager Carolina Mendesabal as saying that passenger buses and relief transports began to pile up since Monday as only eight “Ro-Ro” vessels are servicing Matnog Port to Allen, Samar with only two return trips daily. With the current emergency sitaution, PPA Bicol Director Rosenda Sumagaysay appealed to shipping firms operating in Matnog -- the Montenegro Shipping Lines, Sta. Clara Shipping; Peñafrancia Shipping and the 168 Shipping Lines -- to add eight more ferry vessels to Allen. Sumagaysay also urged the PPA central office to order the use of alternative ports in Bicol to transport the relief goods via Navy craft or air transport from Legazpi Airport. Matnog Port is the shortest route to the Visayas region.
