49 million Americans don’t know if there will be food on their table tonight. 4 million workers have been out of a job for more than six months, 1.6 million children will experience homelessness in the next year, and 1 in 3 American women lives in poverty or on the brink. In the face of an economy increasingly defined by the struggle to afford the most basic of human necessities – a home, a meal and a paycheck – the only solution Congressman Ryan and House Republicans can provide is a budget that gets 70 percent of its savings from cuts to programs for working and middle-class families. Their approach is as economically reckless as it is fundamentally flawed. In this country we invest in our neighbor’s struggle as much as their success. Those standing behind Congressman Ryan’s budget have made it abundantly clear that the only thing they truly value are the futures of a privileged few.
