5-18-14 Whom Do We Honor? Scripture reading: James 2:1-12 What does it mean to be a Christ follower? James was Jesus half brother but he didnt believe that Jesus was the Messiah until after the resurrection. James knew Jesus so when the truth was revealed to him, he was on fire for the Lord. He stayed in Jerusalem where he was the Head Elder leading people to Christ. His book was written to give insight into what it does mean to be a follower. Have you heard the slogan that was popular a few years ago, What Would Jesus Do? Well, He would do it differently than the world and He did. Some examples are: John 4 - the Samaritan woman- first she was a Samaritan, a people despised by the Jews, and second, she had multiple husbands. She was an outcast. What did Jesus do? He went to her. The result was that she became a believer and many came to the Lord because of her testimony. Luke 19:10 Luke 18: 35-42 The blind beggar receives his sight and then shares his testimony with the pharisees and sadducees. Mark 2:15 The tax collector Luke 8:2 Jesus cast out the 7 demons in Mary Magdalene who became a big supporter for Jesus. Luke 19:1-9 Zacchaeus the chief tax collector who climbed a tree so he could see Jesus and Jesus called him down and ate at his home. Zacchaeus was changed. Matthew 4 Jesus calls His disciples away from their fishing nets. They were common men, not those considered holy. Jesus sought out the societys cast offs. How many people can we touch with the Gospel? A gift of flowers, food, a kind word, a loving touch . . . That is our true calling, to share Gods love with everyone no matter their status. It is about how we respond to the gifts/ blessings that God has given us that matters--where your heart is. It is not ours to decide who gets what we share. Matthew 23:1-12 Jesus said, The greatest among you is to be a servant. (verse 11) How do we walk the talk? CHILDRENS SERMON John was an only child of older parents. They believed he was a gift from God and taught him about the Lord. John was a little slow in his thinking. One spring day, his teacher handed out empty plastic eggs to each of the students in the class and instructed them to go outside and find something that represented spring and place it inside their egg. Each child was eager to share with the class what they had found, including John. But the teacher ignored Johns raised hand, because she didnt think he understood the lesson. She tried to go onto something else but John stopped her by saying, Teacher, I havent had a chance to share what I found. Reluctantly, she said, okay John, what do you have to share? He opened his egg and it was empty. The class began to laugh and make fun of him. But John went onto say, The egg is empty just as the tomb where Jesus was laid was empty. Spring reminds me of Jesus. The class and teacher were silent.
