5 Thankful Things for 5 Days (4/5) 1) I used to think that if I hadn’t done something amazing with my gifts by the time I hit 30, I was a failure. I am thankful that there are no age limits for using the gifts that we’ve been given. 2) A while back I asked a friend for forgiveness for some hurtful words that I had spoken a long time ago; the words had been burning my throat for years. When I brought up the conversation, she didn’t remember it—and when I say that she didn’t remember it, I mean that she literally had no memory of the entire incident. She actually laughed at me for dragging around forgotten words like a dirty backpack with broken straps. I am thankful for friends who value friendship and forgiveness to the extent that it is unfathomable for them to consider walking away—whether they have literally or figuratively forgotten an offence. 3) Lately I have been asking questions about how we approve of male/female images, according to our gender. For example, if I were to post a beautiful picture of Connor holding Micah, I know the pic would receive between 100-150 likes within a 24 hour timeframe. However, if I were to post the same pic of Morgan holding Micah, that pic would receive only 50-75 likes. So here’s the question: are you more or less likely to “like” a photo of a beautiful teenager holding a baby if the teenager shares your gender? I am thankful for friends who will thoughtfully answer this question for the purposes of my research. 4) The kids and I have been talking a lot about what is happening in Iraq, and I can feel the weight of it on our shoulders. Even as I write these lists of thankfulness, I feel guilty because I have so often taken for granted our basic safety. I am thankful that we are safe for today, while recognizing that we may not always enjoy this security. 5) Several months ago, Zane and I decided that we would go all in. Here’s the thing: at the end of our lives, we don’t want to be sitting around wishing we had been more. Because that’s what it comes down to, right? It’s not about HAVING or DOING, it’s about BEING. I am thankful for the people in my life who tell me when I’m off the track and running across the field in the wrong direction.
