5 songs over 5 days. Day 3. What album changed everything for you? What album really started you down that never ending road of musical discovery? By the time I spun Crises by Mike Oldfield on my turntable I had already had an extensive education in The Beatles, XTC (thanks Douglas), The Corries (thanks Dad) and was also an avid listener of Radio. The aforementioned groups are still all very dear to me but it was the purchase of Crises in Torquay during BB camp in 83 that really kicked off my journey. At the time in 83 the single off of the album, Moonlight Shadow had already caught my ear on the radio and this was indeed my motivation in buying the album. It was the title track however that had the biggest impact on me. Crises is an extended track that is in excess of 20 minutes but to this day still feels like it flies by in 5. There is nothing laboured about this song, it flows beautifully and has such a natural structure. It is not a hard song to listen to at all. There is so much I love about it; the melodies, the production, the performance and, above all of that, the drumming. This was the album that really turned me on to the drums. Simon Phillips performance on and the scoring of the drums on Crises was a complete revelation. Their dynamism makes the hairs on my back stand on end to this day. Crises was released only ten years after Tubular Bells and in one way it is a celebration of that landmark album..another extended piece. That I wasnt scared off by such long tracks stood me in good stead when Steve Blair lent me 90125 by Yes in the same year which led to another musical journey where the extended track was the norm. My love for this track and the album it comes from runs very deep. https://youtube/watch?v=z747sa9rd9A
