A report in the ABC Online News this morning states that. “Sri Lanka’s navy has intercepted a boat full of asylum seekers who were reportedly heading to Australia. . . . . The asylum seeker boat had been floating off the south-west coast of Sri Lanka for several days after its engines failed. Military sources say there were 70 people onboard the boat and they had paid money to be taken to Australia. “The navy responded to a distress message sent out on Thursday and the passengers were rescued, and brought ashore on Friday,” a naval official told reporters at the southern port of Galle. Navy spokesman Kosala Warnakulasuriya confirmed the rescue, saying that investigations are underway. Prime Minister Tony Abbott has vowed to act swiftly to implement a central plank of his election campaign to “stop the boats”, sending a strong signal to people-smugglers. However, many Sri Lankans have said they were still hopeful of taking a boat ride to Australia to start a new life. In many cases asylum seekers are trying to escape poverty at home. They did not reach Australian waters. They will not be reported in the statistics kept by Herr ÜberGrossenFührer Morrison’s tame soldier. Yet they are asylum seekers. They set out for Australia on a boat. I am including them in the “Timeline’s” statistics. Tony Abbott has NOT stopped the boats. (By the way, has anyone else noticed the iincogruity of having an Army General running what is basically a Naval operation?) A closer reading of the ABC report shows a couple of interesting spinning bits. “. . . asylum seekers are trying to escape poverty at home“ See, they are not REAL asylum seekers. “. . . Only one small problem. The people smugglers are ignoring him! No one talks about it any more but Asylum Seekers are not pulled to our “shores” by lenient treatment. Asylum Seekers are just like us. Most of us want to settle down in familiar surroundings and live a quiet life with those we love around us. Asylum Seekers are PUSHED our way by fear and danger and persecution.
