73 years ago today, the defenders of Bataan comprised of a joint group of Filipinos and Americans fell under the superior force of the Empire of Japan. There was no reason to be ashamed though, they had successfully delayed the Japanese advance and their conditions, dominated by lack of food, medicine and ammunition, meant they braved the impossible and relied only on their love of freedom to do what they did. These dauntless men and women shall forever be remembered under what is today called the Day of Valor. I am also proud to say my grandfather, 18 at that time, was among them and survived the notorious Death March that followed. We salute the heroes who fought and gave life, blood, sweat and tears to give us the freedom we enjoy today!
