7th December 1914: Daily Mirror headline ‘A soldier sleeps amid the snow: What Christmas means to our brave troops at the front.’ The Serbian government issues the Nis Declaration, stating that its war aim is the unification of the south Slavs into one state. South African forces defeat Boer rebels. The Boer leader, Christiaan Frederik Beyers, drowns while fleeing across the Vaal River. Carillon for reciter and orchestra by Edward Elgar to words of Cammaerts, is performed for the first time, in Queen’s Hall, London, conducted by the composer. The work is written in memory of all the bell towers of Flanders destroyed in the current conflict. Germans attempt to cross the Yser again without success. Indian Expeditionary Force completed by arrival of Sirhind Brigade from Egypt. In Mesopotamia the British troops have success at Mezera.
