8 monsoon related diseases you should protect yourself Monsoon has arrived with a vengeance this year - bringing with it endless potholes, waterlogged roads and never-ending traffic jams. Here are eight monsoon-related diseases from which you need to protect yourself: Malaria: It takes the number one spot in the list of top common monsoon ailments. Female anopheles mosquito causes malaria; they usually breed in waterlogged areas. Thus, clean your water tank frequently to avoid the risk of malaria. The common symptoms of malaria are fever, shivers, muscle pain and weakness. Viral fever: However, viral fever occurs during all season, but they are most often during monsoon. The common symptoms of viral fever are mild to severe fever, which can last for 3 to 7 days, along with cold and cough. Diarrhoea: This is another common ailment during monsoon, which is caused due to unhygienic consumption or handling of foods and water. There are two main types of diarrhoea - acute diarrhoea and chronic diarrhoea. Both of these are highly preventable and treatable. In order to prevent this bowel problem, maintain proper hygiene, wash hands before handling food and drink only boiled water. Cholera: It is a deadly monsoon disease. Cholera is usually caused by consuming contaminated food and water. It is also caused due to poor hygienic conditions. Severe diarrhoea with lose motions are the most common symptoms of cholera. One can prevent the occurrence of cholera by drinking clean water and maintain a proper hygiene. Dengue: Dengue fever is a monsoon ailments caused by mosquitoes. The common symptoms of dengue are fever, body aches, joint pain and rash. Tiger mosquito causes this monsoon ailment. To avoid being a victim of tiger mosquito, use insect repellent and cover yourself properly with clothes. Chikungunya: This disease is transmitted by the bite of infected aedes albopictus mosquitoes. These mosquitoes breed in stagnated water and bite during bright daylight. The common symptoms of chikungunya include an abrupt onset of fever, which is accompanied by joint pain. To prevent this monsoon ailment clean your water containers regularly and use insect repellent. Typhoid: This is a water-borne disease, which is on high-rise during monsoon. S. Typhi bacteria cause typhoid, which is transmitted through consuming contaminated water or food. Poor sanitation also causes this disease to spread. The common symptoms of typhoid are fever, headache, weakness, pain and sore throat. To prevent the occurrence of this problem wash your hands regularly, avoid consuming street-side food or water and drink plenty of healthy fluid. Stomach infection: The monsoon also brings in serious stomach infections like gastroenteritis, which can cause severe vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach pain. To prevent stomach problems, avoid eating roadside food, drink only boiled water and drink plenty of fluids.
