A Day with Buddy 8-9-14 PART X: Buddy: In the Fall of 1941 we corresponded a few times and then I had to go on maneuvers in Louisiana with the 3rd Army. We fought the 1st Army out of NY and we did not even have any tanks so we just took a big truck and pretended it was a tank. We beat them so bad. I called her on the phone afterwards and I said to her, I love you and I want to marry you. She took about 10 seconds to answer. It seemed forever. Then she said, OK. What I did not know at the time was that she had a date standing next to her, a wealthy man about 15 years older than she was, and she had to decide while he was standing there. After Louisiana, I got a 30 day leave and went to St. Louis, where she lived for an engagement party. Her mother (my grandmother Kate Dubinsky) hated me from the start and NEVER liked me the whole time we were married. Kate wanted Lorrayne to marry the rich man (because $ was all that mattered to my grandmother). We set a wedding date for March 1942. When the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor on Sunday, Dec. 7,1941, Lorrayne called me and said we had to get married in 3 weeks. Her father, a lawyer, pulled strings and made all the arrangements for a San Antonio wedding on Sunday, Dec. 28th,1941 at the St. Anthony hotel.
