A FUN outing to a popular KwaZulu-Natal North Coast restaurant turned sour for an interracial couple, who claim they were victims of a racist attack by a group of Afrikaner men – a day after Nelson Mandela’s one-year death anniversary. Cigarette company sales representative Ndumiso Mbili, 25, and his Indian girlfriend, who declined to be named, were at The Prawn Shack enjoying a “lazy lunch” when they were allegedly insulted by a group of diners who likened Mbili’s hair to Velcro. “They started off by telling us that there was something on our faces. They continued with their taunts and we tried our best to ignore them. Naturally they were a large group and it was only the two of us,” said Mbili. Mbili said at around 5pm they headed back to their car. “Little did we know that they were following us. The one guy screamed that my hair looked like Velcro. I asked him what he meant by that and he told me he would beat me up. “He then walked over and punched me twice in the face and my nose began bleeding. She (my girlfriend) was hysterical and was pushed in the process. She cut her knee and her hand and was bleeding.” Mbili said the commotion alerted the restaurant staff who came outside to assist. The couple said the following day the owner called to apologise. Bill Budd, the owner of The Prawn Shack, said: “This incident had nothing to do with us and we are certainly not racist. I advised the couple to lay a charge.” Budd said he contacted the group “and they said one of the guys was completely out of line and wanted to apologise”.
