A Lost Story of Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya & His Brief Biography Sujala-Suphala Fatickchari Town is in a scenic area of Bangladesh. The mountains, rivers and fertile plains in this region combined with the enlightened luminaries from this area give it a rich heritage. One famous personality born in this area was a well known monk by the name of Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya. He was born on 30th June, 1952. His childhood name was Subas Chandra Barua, Subas meaning Fragrance and Chandra meaning Moon. He was born into a respectable Buddhist family at Harualchari Village of Fatickchari Upazila in Chittagong, Bangladesh. His mother’s name was Manondha Barua and his father’s name was Arpon Charan Barua. In 1971, he took part in the war for the sovereignty and independence of Bangladesh.He was the disciple of the Most Venerable Dharmadhara Mahathero, who was a renowned Buddhist philosopher and scholar and his initiation preceptor. He took his higher ordination at the age of 27 in 1979 at Dharmangakr Vihar in Calcutta, India. He was the founder of Harualchari Buddha Social Welfare Association. He was the director of Jobara Sugata Vihar, Gunalankara Orphanage and Kadalpur Sudharmananda Vihar. He also served as Principal of Archon Shovon Pali College and taught at Baro Mashiya High School. He was the Director-General of the Bangladesh Bhikkhu Training and Practice Center and Co-Secretary of Mahamandal Welfare Organization (MWO). In 1993, he received the Medal of Honor from the Government of Bangladesh, Youth Ministry for being the best social worker in Raozan District. He was considered to be a brilliant guiding light to the youth of Fatickchari and his contributions will be long remembered. Sadly, he passed away at the young age of 42 in San Mateo, California, on October 24, 1994. Most Venerable Late Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya was an outstanding Buddhist monk who was associated with many Buddhist social organizations, religious and spiritual development works. He was greatly inspired by two great and legendary Buddhist monks, His Holiness Deputy Sangharaj Ven. Gyanasri Mahastovir and Most Ven. Projna Bangsha Mahastovir. They are three jewels of our contemporary Bangladesh Buddhist society. He was a very dedicated Buddhist monk who always led a very simple life. He will be alive within all Bangladeshi people as we remember him and his outstanding valuable work. Note: - The birthplace of Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya Bujpur Fatickchari District, Village Harualchari will be celebrate the annual robes offering ceremony ( Kattin Chibor Dana) which will be held on Saturday, 11th October 2014 at Harualchari Buddha JetabanVihar. In this spiritual ceremony, morning we will offer Sangha Dana, Astapariskara and the newly-built three-story building will be inaugurated to dedicate our merit to Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya and PharaAjhan Dennis Dhammanissiyo Thero. In this newly built three-story building the 1st floor will be Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya Morning Dhamma School and PaliTol. The 2nd floor will be a meditation hall and 3rd floor will be monks and guest residences dedicated to the memory of Bhikkhu H. Sugatapriya and Ajhan Dennis Dhammanissiyo. In the afternoon will be the annual robes offering ceremony, Dhamma talks, and a donation offering ceremony.The President of this ceremony will be most Venerable Silananda Maahastovir and many other distinguish important respected monks will also be in attendance.
