A committed believer must make a positive effort to grow in knowledge of the truth of salvation. If we are not making an effort to grow, the only alternative is to go in reverse. We begin to degenerate if we do not make an effort to grow. This is clear from the words of Jesus recorded in Matthew 11:25-30: "I praise you. Father. Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes. Father, for this was your good pleasure..." Discipleship involves learning. The ancient Greeks used a variety of words to express the fact that a disciple is a learner. They described the discipling process as one in which you directed your mind to a teacher’s words, attitudes, and actions. From the knowledge gained, the practice of a skill or craft would be shaped. A disciple was thus an apprentice, a SERIOUS STUDENT, whose mind and hand were applied to learning and doing after the master’s pattern. Homer, Parmenides, Xenophon and Plato spoke of discipleship in these terms. The desire for quick fixes and short cuts has led many into the cold calculative snares of many self-serving preachers and teachers who con them into servicing their appetites, lusts and egos. Sound teachings and doctrines are worthy bedrocks of fruitful discipleship. Do you desire sound doctrine or are you easily led astray by fantasies and quicksand teachings? BEWARE! Eternal salvation is at stake.
