A couple years ago my outboard had broken on my boat during the peak of duck season. Buffles, goldeneye, canvasbacks and bluebills were just a few of the possible 24 different kinds of duck that were migrating in. There was no way I wasnt going to get on those birds and my buddy Giles and I decided on a plan. We had a spot on the river we could walk to and throw decoys, wearing our chest waders, just far enough from shore to be convincing. We still didnt have a boat but we did have a pretty amazing Lab named Guinness and we were confident he could bring us any birds we dropped. It wasnt long after we set up when a small group of bluebills flew into range. One dropped and Guinness was commanded to action. When the dog got half way to the bird it up righted itself and began to recover. By the time Guinness had gotten to him he was well enough to dive a few short feet at a time. The bird dove and dipped over and over. Several times the dog had grabbed hold only to have the duck get loose again. The prey drive Guinness has is the strongest Ive ever seen and he was not about to give up. The chase continued and the distance they got from shore became worrisome fast. Giles tried calling Guinness off the bird and using whistle commands but the young lab was locked on target. The dog was getting too far out for his own good and his shock collar was at home. Giles waded out as far as he could and hollered for his pup. He looked back at me and I knew instantly that he would swim for that dog in the icy water without a second thought. He called one last time and finally Guinness broke free of the chase and swam back to the arms of his master. During our own walk with God there are times when we, like Guinness, get fixated on something we want so badly that we dont realize it isnt good for us. Sometimes it seems almost too conveniently within grasp only to evade every effort to grip or hold on. It may be a person we love that doesnt have that same love in return, an unhealthy addiction to the feeling of being happy... falsely produced by a pill or other type of drug, Working excessive hours to never make enough money at the cost of irreplaceable time; time with family members at home or any number of desires the flesh craves that the spirit condemns. The very thing we think will bring happiness, that we crave with almost reckless abandon may ultimately result in a bitter or less than desirable and lonely end. Fortunately, like the young pup we are not alone. We also have a loving father who calls us back to him even when all hope of being heard seems lost. He too will wade into the deep waters with us because his love for us knows no boundary...no fear of sacrifice that could ever stop him from bringing us back to his arms where we belong. We need only to heed his command. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” (Luke 5:32 HCSB) For the Son of Man has come to save the lost. (Matthew 18:11 HCSB) This was to fulfill the words He had said: “I have not lost one of those You have given Me.” (John 18:9 HCSB) My brothers and sisters I pray for us today that we hear our fathers voice even in times when our own will seeks to drive us in another direction. I pray that we are able to break free from the hold of all unhealthy desires that call to us, like Sirens that attempt lure us deep into treacherous waters away from His Word and the shores of his love. youtu.be/xoZE2RsthRg
