A few days ago President Barack Obama announced the broad outlines of our American strategy for dealing with ISIL: 1.) Secretary of Defense Hagel and the Pentagon and General Dempsey, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, are drawing-up specific military options and running scenarios so we dont mistakenly think weve accomplished our mission and then get bogged down in a no-win situation; 2.) Secretary of State Kerry and others are building an international coalition so American taxpayers wont have to foot the bill alone and so American lives are not the only ones on the line, as happens when we go it alone; and, 3.) President Obama and Secretary Kerry are working behind the scenes to build a real coalition of Arab partners to deprive ISIL of being able to spin the war as an indiscriminate attack by America on Muslims, so they cant turn the world against us as they did when we attacked Iraq without provocation and without Arab partners. Since all of these things take awhile to put together and since we are still in the process of doing so, President Obama said that he didnt yet have a concrete strategy which could be put to a vote in congress, even as he was specifically stating the broad outlines -- for those who were listening to the content of what was being said, rather than searching for yet another excuse to slam President Obama. So if you were part of the crowd gleefully running around clapping and singing, Obamas got no strategy, you can thank yourself when your favorite show is interrupted tonight at 9:00 p.m. when President Obama addresses the nation to announce his strategy, for those who require the obvious to be stated in a particular and technical way...when its President Obama. No president is going to foolishly reveal exact military strategy. What you will hear tonight is the exact same thing you would have heard before if you had been listening. The only difference will be, tonight he will utter the words, this is our strategy to go along with the strategy he has already announced.
