A few folk have commented on the spartan existence in these old houses (I photographed this one on Sanday) but consider what it would be like without one. Whenever I stay in island bothies I appreciate protection from wind and rain. Add fuel, food, water from the burn and some dry bedding and I can be comfortable all night. Add a book, candles, a dram, a comfy chair and - whoooa - bliss. When the trappings of modern life are stripped away, its great to relish and appreciate the basics - for a while.
