A few months back at a wedding a friend casually mentioned his visit to Madras (or what’s known as Chennai) to us while at sitting at the bar. He said how the south is a different country altogether, mentioned how all direction boards in the city were in Tamil (not true), how the locals are uncouth and no one apparently speaks anything but the language that obviously made no damn sense to him. Now like many other occasions in the past that was my cue to take off. This is when (close friends would know) I am all set to bombard the table with facts and battle it out to bring the walls of stereotypes down. Did that end well or did anyone walk away with a new perspective, it is an obvious NO! I have always taken these arguments way too personally and always defended each city that I have some affiliation with. But then I thought maybe there is something in this that I need to embrace and accept. And I did! I realised that being in the digital age, if you a so called educated individual cannot manage to navigate in a new city, use technology or let’s see basic intellect, it doesnt say too much about a place it instead talks volumes about you. Tomorrow you would land in France or China expecting the locals to speak your language or readily fall at your feet to welcome and honour your presence in their country. Bottom line is that one has to learn to adapt or continue cribbing man - your choice! India is so diverse and has so much to offer. Let US as Indians not be on a mission to divide each other because we are different, let us instead acquire the ability to appreciate it! *Happy Travelling*
