A large number of my students do not have a textbook. My teaching style requires them to read the textbook and to discuss it in class, and I give mini-quizes to drive them to do the reading. Some are waiting on their financial aid to be released to them. Many of you are alumni of one of my classes, others are faculty from here and there. I once asked Dr. Bier how to handle a problem where I had made a mistake preparing a reagent for the lab in an analytical chemistry course. For those who dont know, he is revered by all his former students, many who are now faculty, as The Standard for how to teach chemistry. He told me, they are responsible to get the right results. Clean and simple. My stomach churns at the prospect of telling them get the book somehow, or get low grades, because I know that their difficulties are real, and not of their making.
