A memorial in Yellow Springs, Chester County, PA......I am proud of my heritage. My 5th Great-Grandmother Christina Schneider Hench is honored here, as well as her neighbor and friend Abigail Hartman Rice. The 2 families intermarried, infact Abigails daughter Susannah is my 4th Great-Grandmother, so they are both my ancestors. Abigail and Zachariah Rices oldest daughter Elizabeth married Jacob Hipple, an ancestor to my husband Wallace Hipple.....these women (Abigail and Christina) helped nurse Revolutionary War soldiers and eventually both died contracting Typhus. It is not true, though, that Christina Hench lost all her sons in the Revolutionary War (as this site suggests). My 4th great-grandfather Johan Jacob Hench survived and moved to Juniata County where my grandmother eventually was born and grew up. Christinas Husband Johannes Hench and his family were French Huguenots, escaping religious and economic persecution by coming to America. Zachariah Rice helped build the war hospital at Yellow Springs (pictured here). Abigail and he also gave many of their cattle and peaches from their orchards to General Waynes troops as they retreated from the Battle of Brandywine. Abigail had 22 children (though in my genealogy I only have a mere 21 listed), Christina had 9 children. I am grateful for all they sacrificed for their families, their future posterity by coming to America and working hard, and by supporting the cause of Liberty.
