A new study offers some sobering implications for dog breeders - including kind folks fostering rescue dog litters. Fear can be transmitted from mother to babies through odors. In short, the study paired the smell of peppermint with mild electric shocks to female rats, pre-pregnancy to create a fearful association with that scent. After the rats gave birth, they exposed them to the scent without the shock. The result? The baby rats learned to fear the peppermint because of their mothers response --- which included her scent. The scent of the fearful mother even when she was not present was sufficient for the pups to respond fearfully to the peppermint. For anyone involved in rearing young animals, this is a must read. Especially if you think that just love & good food will overcome a fearful, anxious mother. medicalnewstoday/articles/280290.php
