* A piece of advice * Youngsters trying their hand at writing these days tend to do a pretty ordinary job in most cases. The reason for this is simple. What goes inside their impressionable minds comes out in the form of their own write-ups. Now its no rocket science to understand that a writer who has read a lot of good books will have a better mental framework to channelise his thoughts, visualise his ideas and pen his words. But when the fodder are writers like Chetan Bhagat, Durjoy Dutta, Nikita Singh, Ravinder Singh etc, then the people who get inspired from these writers automatically constrain themselves to think and write in a simpler way. Note that none of these writers are bad, just that there works are too simple, and too easy to relate to for most of the readers. When you read something that is easy to relate to, you get into a comfort zone. That comfortable cushion stops you from reading anything even remotely time-consuming. Many of the people I know have read either Umberto Eco or Chetan Bhagat, but probably nobody has read both. Other readers have gone on to read a slightly higher class of writers, namely, Ashwin Sanghi and Amish Tripathy. Now these writers are good too, but these writers still do not inspire a reader to alter their writing style and stories. Most young writers therefore follow the following pattern - 1. They read Ashwin Sanghi and Amish Tripathys class of writers. 2. Since they are not capable enough of replicating the style of Sanghi and Tripathy, when they do write, their style falls a notch below this level, and hence their work ends up closer to the level of Chetan Bhagat, Durjoy Dutta, Nikita Singh, Ravinder Singh etc. Every student interested in scoring well knows that if you want to score 90%, you dont target 90% but 100%. Writing is similar to scoring in exams in that sense. If you want to be a decent writer, dont follow other decent writers. Instead, follow the good writers. If you want to be a good writer, dont follow other good writers. Instead, follow the great writers. Inspiration can never be translated perfectly into work. A gap always exists, and that needs to be understood. ~ Abhijit
