A quick review of The Norman Conquest by Marc Morris. Im sure many of you will already know this book, but for those who dont and are looking for a good history of the events of 1066 and its aftermath this is highly recommended. It combines great readability with a thorough grounding in and discussion of the fascinating range of sources (plus notes and bibliography, splendid!). I learnt a lot and am now going to devour all of Marc Morriss other tomes. With a particular interest in ethnicity and history, I appreciated the following, from the books outstanding introduction. Pointing out that historians have often taken sides in the history of the conquest, he says, Whoever these people [the pre-1066 English] were, they are not us. They are our forebears from 1000 years ago - as are the Normans.... it is high time we stopped taking sides. The work then goes on to illustrate the impact of the conquest vividly. Great stuff!
