A recently released study found that 230,000 office visits for strep throat and 8,500 prescriptions for unneeded antibiotics could be avoided annually using a simple call-in questionnaire. The patient-reported symptom questionnaire and the local incidence of strep throat combine to calculate a patients likelihood of having strep throat. Patients identified as high risk could then be referred for testing and treatment. But there are some limitations to this method, such as a lack of real-time information regarding the local incidence of strep throat.
