Special thanks goes to Gundi Weinek, fairy godmother to the fundraising efforts, and Geoff Klass for his kind commitment. Thanks goes also to Westgate Auctioneers and CourierIt. Rebecca Owen (19), daughter of Heather Owen and Patrick Bulger and family friend (and someone that has been part of our lives since she was 4) was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in August 2008. After 3 years of chemotherapy Rebecca was considered cured and stopped all treatment. At the beginning of the year Rebecca enrolled at UCT starting her new life as a student studying for her BA planning on majoring in Law. After the first semester she came back to Johannesburg for mid-year break and went for a check up. Unfortunately she had relapsed and now she has to battle the disease all over again. This time round on-going chemotherapy is not an option. Rebecca has to have a bone marrow transplant and as soon as possible. The family have to find a donor and this is not covered by medical aid. They have been unsuccessful finding an African bone marrow match. So now they have to set their sights on an International bone marrow donor. This costs an enormous amount of money. According to the doctor R 400 000.00 for an European match and up to R 750 000.00 for an American match. Over the last 5 years they have had numerous requests and offers from family and friends wanting to help. They are now put into a situation where everyones support will make a vital difference. Heather has opened a bank account called ‘Becca’s Donor Fund’ and as close friends we have come together to try and raise money toward this operation. Any money raised above the amount required will go toward the Sunflower Foundation. (The Sunflower Fund’s core purpose is to educate, recruit and raise funds to build and sustain an effective The South African Bone Marrow Registry (SABMR) as a viable source of well informed ethnically-diverse potential bone marrow donors so as to meet the national and international requirements and improve the chances of life-saving transplants for serious blood disorder sufferers.)
