A study of history has made me realize that the world will always hate the Jews no matter what. The Europeans have always hated them, always will, in the guise of something or the other (Nazism, European Left). Muslims have famously inherited the legacy of intense Jew hatred from their principle figure who completely cleansed the Arabian peninsula of Jews who were thriving there during his own lifetime. Khybar, Khybar, O Yahood? (Google it). Now even the Malaysian Muslim feels obliged as matter of religious duty to harbor a genocidal ambition towards the Jew, despite the fact that he never has, never will come into contact with a Jew his whole life. So, this begs the question: Why do people across cultures, so consistently and across various time periods so deeply deeply despised the Jews? This is the explanation that I have arrived at. Feel free to post your own: People hate the Jews because they always excel at what they do. They never fitter away their hard earned money in trivial things. They value accumulation of wealth through sustained and long term industry. They are always a tight knit community and have a sense of duty towards their own, be it by raising money to send some needy kid to college or by taking care of their weak and infirm. They usually dont take up farming or manual labor. They rely on their intellect. They become prosperous, rich and intellectually leading figures of their community wherever they are, or during whatever time period they live in. Middle Age Europe, 500 AD Arabia, or 21 Century US, doesnt matter. The Jews have historically been able to make the hard choices and prosper in spite of all the hostilities and difficulties surrounding them. It is in peoples nature to resent other people who are successful. People feel intimidated by them, and consequently develop a deep seated grievance. So they want to appropriate their wealth. The left that believes in the redistribution of wealth despises the Jews working away quietly becoming more and more prosperous than the social average with their own individual effort. It also doesnt help that Jews have been vilified as the killers of the European looking Christ (what an irony right?), with Judas representing the typical Jew who would sell his soul for 30 pieces of silver. Arabs on the other hand despise the Jews because they took over a barren piece of land turned it into the most economically vibrant, agriculturally abundant, technologically advanced, socially progressive, culturally dynamic, militarily strong country in the entire region in less than 50 years. Israel stands there constantly reminding them of their own inability to govern themselves, or create any semblance of a pluralistic, secular, democratic, progressive, modern society in about the 20 odd countries (?) they have for themselves (and with plenty of resources to boot, i.e. oil). The outwardly modern countries like Qatar and UAE are in reality the most suppressed, bigoted, racist, religiously intolerant countries in the world. Take away their oil, they are just primitive nomads underneath. The presence of Israel humiliates them. Israel is a reminder of them of their own inferiority, and it drives them absolutely crazy. It is a difficult thing to stomach for a people who are brought up from childhood on steady diet of the glorious Islamic age when Muslims ruled the world and other accounts of conquering Muslim heroes that fluttered the banner of Islam over the Dead bodies of the Crusaders etc. So if you cant build your own societies and compete, whaddya do? You look to pull down, and completely destroy the society that shames you and torments you. I believe this is a mechanism to reduce your own dissonance between what you believe should be (supremacy of Muslims) vs what is reality (superiority of Israel). Combine this weird schizophrenic mix of inferiority + superiority (in their sense of the past and the sense of divine destiny that Islam will be victorious in the end) with the religiously mandated hatred of the Jews in their daily prayers (Namaz), Jew hatred stemming from the Hadiths, which are further socially reinforced by an acceptable public discourse in the Arab world that says genocide of the Jew is perfectly fine, dehumanizes and demonizes the Jews daily-- in clerical sermons at the Mosque, TV programs, newspapers, idle social conversations etc.... And you get millions of unthinking, brainwashed automatons programmed to hate the Jews (and Christians, and idol worshipers, and atheists etc). Social conditioning at its most efficient in societies after societies, nations after nations, all across the Muslim world. If you ask me a sad and catastrophic waste of human capital and potential over imagined Arabian fairy tales from the middle ages. I think it speaks immensely that the Jewish people, despite everyone hating them so much, and so many numerous obstacles, have prospered and progressed even more and more. They have given us civilization. Jesus, Einstein, Freud, Abraham Maslow, Fran Kafka, Karl Marx, Mark Zuckerberg, Stephan Speilberg.....I could just go on and on. I would say that it is precisely because people hate them so much the Jews have hunkered down and worked towards towards making themselves better than the sea of hostile people around them trying to destroy them. The Jews have wonderfully used other peoples hate to rise above the common ruck. The US (and Canada) has been the only nation in the world in modern times where Jews have not been targeted just because they were Jews. In ancient and middle ages it was India that always sheltered the Jews without a single recorded incident of antisemitism. Oh, and incidentally the Persians, when they were Zoroastrians, liberated the Jews from the bondage of Babylonian slavery, after which they scattered all over the world. The Persian king Darious (?) it was who is extolled in the Torah as a divine figure for having emancipated them. Now? The Islamic republic of Iran just wants nuke em, because modern-Persia is a mental colony of Arabia through the adoption of the Arab religion, and Arab priorities much like any Muslim society anywhere. Because the Jews have always been hated and killed en-masse their whole history, (still are hated and still will be killed en-masse if their enemies could), and have absolutely nowhere to go, my sympathies will always be with the Israelis. Not because they are children of God or any other nonsense like that. Just because their entire historical memory is too traumatic and they rightfully should do everything to protect themselves. People will always hate them and want to kill them because (in the words of an urban teenager), the Jews are actually quite awesome and haters gonna hate. -by Avish Adhikari.
