A very long time ago, I met a woman online. Her name was Debbie. She was everything anyone would ever want in a friend. She was patient, kind, sensitive, caring blah blah blah…all those things that you would say or hear about someone. The one thing that she was more than anything else was that she was SELFLESS. She would and did do things for other people that she was not really able to do…yet she found a way. Generally speaking, I was better off (the pauper that I am) financially than she was. Yet she found a way once to lend me money when I desperately needed it. That money did what it needed for me and I was able to pay her back, thankfully. We were always there for each other. We could call each other anytime, day or night, drunk (me, never her) or sober. We could, would and did talk about anything for hours…sometimes nothing for long periods. Just that connection of friendship on the phone, knowing that there was someone else who knew your life and cared about you. There were times, like when she went to Iraq to work in the store to serve the troops there that we did not communicate. However, we always cared and prayed for each other…wished and hoped the best for one another, and talked about everything or nothing almost every day. We never met in person…but always said we would someday. We just knew that we would do that. I learned today, again, that someday never comes. Debbie passed away this morning. My dearest friend, rest in peace. I will still talk to you when I can. Let us all remember that life is not only short, but uncertain. You never know what will happen in the next five seconds, much less tomorrow. Live each moment of your life as if it were you last, for it very well may be. May God bless everyone with a Debbie for a friend…I will miss her terribly.
