ACTOR SPOTLIGHT OF THE MONTH- KEVIN RYAN Over the past months, Michelle and I have had the privilege of posting interviews from several of the cast members from Copper: Jim, Dylan, Aaron, Anastasia, Lara Jean and Kendra. The actors answered our written questions. Kevin had been trying to get back to me with his answers but projects got in the way. He suggested that we do the interview over the phone! So the following are his answers to me after a long, long workday of night shooting (Battle of Bunker Hill) and he still had to have a meeting with the director! As you will see at the end of the article, he was very flattering, and does appreciate his fans. Thanks Kevin for taking time out of your work to talk to us. That soft Irish accent and great laugh do not come across the page, but I remember! Actor Spotlight Kevin Ryan 1. What made you go into acting? It was always with me as a kid, I always loved performing. Even at home, literally as a toddler I was always performing in front of my parents, family and friends. Then in school my parents put me into a drama class as an extra course and I loved it, it just kinda stuck with me. Through my teens I had a phenomenal English teacher and he would give us Shakespeare. Our homework would be to break this character down and make him your own, find out what all of his objectives are. These were all techniques for the method of acting I studied, Stanislavski. Basically my teacher gave me the foundation on how to approach a character in the same dynamic as what I trained as an actor. I was dancing at the time and doing some commercial work as a dancer and I decided to take acting seriously began to study and started working. Then I got representation and started the journey, but it was always the thing I was very fond of and inspired by, driven by. It has never felt like work to me, it is more of a passion. 2. As an actor you get to travel a lot, tell us your favorite location so far. Home, Dublin and family that is my favorite location (laughing). Unfortunately I am not there a lot but I travel back there, absolutely my favorite, I love the city, I love the people, I love the culture. Would love to spend more time there. I saw my family briefly before I came here, and I left my dog with my family. My dog is in Ireland with my family right now. I think they are getting too attached to her and I might have trouble taking her away from them. She is so sweet and adorable; I might need a good nail bar (crowbar) to get her back they have literally fallen in love with her. (Laughing) 3.Dream role? You know that is such a big question, I don’t think I have one specific dream role; it is just to work with great directors and great actors and tell great stories. I just get so many scripts each week to go through and the ones that shine are the ones you want to do. Unlike theater where you go on a stage and can control a performance, film and TV are different because ultimately your performance and the story get created in postproduction. You give what you give on that actual day of shooting and then it is told in its own format in post. As actors we all look for great roles and as an actor I don’t have particular one I would like to play, I am always looking for great material and that is what drives me. Like Sons of Liberty, it came across my desk and I read it. I am a big American History buff. I love history and politics of it all and I just fell in love with the story, because something like this, it doesn’t just tell the story of how the American Revolution came about, it tells the story of the people. You get a window into this world of how these legendary characters are. It is our version of it and that is what exciting. ((((((I asked if it was based on book Sons of Liberty, and he said no, it is a complete original script, based on several books read for research , 1776 and Battle of Bunker Hill for example.))))) “Own stand alone piece, excuse the pun but certain liberties were taken but it is its own story. I can’t wait to see the final, what we are shooting looks great. It is interesting playing on the other side of it, a British Major, because in the context of what it is you are playing the villain, but you know it’s really a great role full of depth, confusion and politics and its pretty technical.“ 4. Where do you see yourself in 10 years, acting directing writing? I would love to direct but not right now. I am enjoying life as an actor and I just want to grow really, I want to get better. Really I want to continue doing what is good work, hopefully, what is good work. Working with better people, staying focused and keeping my head down. Yeah directing is something I would like to look at but my focus is not there right now. There are a couple of scripts I have been working on with my creative writing partner, Matthew Spradlin so hopefully we start getting some of them made in the next six months to a year and a half. I have a screenplay at the moment where we are trying to finish it off and set some dates to shoot it. (((I asked if he would be acting or directing in them, and he said, “ I would be acting and producing” (and then had to explain to me what the difference between director and producer was now I get it!)))) 5. I’m sure you had some “fun” jobs before acting, what was your first job? I think the first job ever in my life was handing out flyers and newspapers. ((laughing)) I remember we were playing soccer as kids and this guy pulled up in a van and asked if we wanted to hand out flyers and such around the neighborhood and he would give us three pounds each time we did this and so (laughing) boy we were on it. Yeah, I had some interesting jobs when I was in Ireland. When I was in school I worked in a bar, a supermarket at one point and with my family as a natural stone carver and letterer. I did my apprenticeship with my dad and so I got really good at carving and I really love sculpting. ((I asked if he could still do that as a hobby))- I love to carve I simply love it would love to do it over the years and maybe someday, like display it. I had a great time and loved it and if I wasn’t an actor I would go back probably to Ireland and work at my dads. Both of my brothers are with the company also. 6. Thank you for answering our questions, is there anything else you would like to share with us, like something coming up we should keep our eyes out for? I can’t talk about projects that I haven’t been consented to talk about, so I don’t know what to say as we have disclosure agreements. That is why when I do get to talk about it I usually put it out in the form of an article or something. When they tell me that I can talk about it then I can discuss it, but yeah there are many other projects coming up, I might even be doing one right after this project, but I will let everyone know on Twitter or Facebook when I can. I thanked him and he thanked me and said how he appreciated all of his fans and how WE inspire him to do well with our support. ”I see myself as very fortunate to have the support that I have from my fans.”
