ALL FOR THE LOVE OF A FRUIT CAKE One Christmas, two years after - TopicsExpress

ALL FOR THE LOVE OF A FRUIT CAKE One Christmas, two years after my mother had both breast removed, she was 82 and my dad was 74. Mom decided that she wanted to make a fruit cake for Christmas, but because of the surgery she couldnt stir the mixture. Therefore, no sooner had Mom spoken when Dad jumps our of his chair and says, Why sure, I can do that for ya maid, lets go do it While Mom got the cake pan and the bowls, Dad was down in the basement getting his rum bottle for the magic ingredient. Well, once everything was on the counter, they started in. Mom would do so much, and then she would tell Dad how much to put in, and when to put it in. However, she didnt have to tell him how much rum to put in, because he was sure to taste it first, just to see if it was the right strength Oh My Lord! It was around 6pm, when my sister Selene got off work, she just happened to go visit them, but when she walked into the kitchen, she couldnt believe her eyes. Because what she saw there in that little kitchen, just couldn’t be our parents, who were always so neat and tidy, but instead they were like two little kids laughing and having a good time, and making a mess. Dad was wearing one of Mom’s aprons, and it was all covered in flour, plus there was flour on his face and mustache, and there was more on the floor and the counter. I think Dad must have taken a swig of the rum before he added each ingredient in the mixture. And knowing Dad, he probably put some flour on his and Moms face just to be funny of it. My sister said that, by the time the cake was ready to go in the oven, both of them were ready to drop., and she didn’t know who looked the worst if it was Mom or dad. Its a good thing my sister came by at that time, because ended up cleaned up their mess, while they went and cleaned up themselves. No matter how big of a mess they made, they had a good time doing it together, whereas, the next Christmas Dad wasnt with us anymore, because he died the next March from cancer. Therefore, whenever I think of a Christmas Fruit Cake, I think of Mom and Dad, and all the fun they had making a mess, while making their last Christmas cake together with love. ~Rose Oldford Pesture~
