Frankly, I find it very hard to believe that the European Union could ever allow Ukraine to join or keep its people, for instance, the EU passports or allow Ukraine to Schengen agreement, or allow the free movement of people. I think that there will be a lot of resistance to that from many of the western European countries, which already are having some trouble digesting the effects of allowing the Eastern European countries, such as Poland and Romania and Bulgaria, to become the full members of the EU. I think that maybe, possibly, it will have some effects on that. The other effect it may have is of course on the political leadership of Ukraine, which probably doesn’t realize how top the European Union’s conditions on it will be, if it does seek closer integration, and may find this a good pretext for a pause and to seek something rather less, than the association agreement they were being offered when President Yanukovych was turned it down.
